Asthma is a respiratory condition marked by attacks of spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing. It is usually connected to allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity. Derivatives of xanthine (known collectively as xanthines) are a group of alkaloids commonly used for their effects as mild stimulants and as bronchodilators, notably in the treatment of asthma symptoms
Anti-asthmatics such as intravenous xanthines relax smooth muscle and are used to relieve bronchial spasm and are indicated for severe asthma attack such as aminophylline. There are also long-term asthma control medications which work to reduce the amount of inflammation in the airways and prevent asthma attacks occurring.
